Frequently Asked Questions

How does reaction injection molding (RIM) differ from the injection molding process for thermoplastics?

RIM differs fundamentally by using two low-viscosity liquid components (polyol and isocyanate) that chemically react inside the mold, rather than injecting melted thermoplastic pellets. This allows much lower injection pressures (50-200 psi vs. 10,000-30,000 psi), enabling larger parts with less expensive aluminum tooling instead of hardened steel. RIM produces thermoset polyurethane parts with excellent structural properties, while thermoplastic injection molding creates parts that can be remelted and reshaped.
